Objectives: The concept of gerotranscendence assumes that aging is a natural, individual process towards maturation and accumulation of wisdom, extending into old age. When optimized, this process ends in a new and qualitatively different perspective of life.
Methods: This study analyzed in Korean elderly the interrelations among gerotranscendence, self-differentiation, perceived physical health, and relationships with adult children. The study attempted to examine the relative importance of the latter three variables on gerotranscendence. Data were collected from 374 elderly people by means of a self-administered questionnaire.
Results: Correlation analysis results showed that older people¡¯s level of gerotranscendence was positively related with the degrees of I-position (a sub-dimension of self-differentiation), awareness of health state, and relationship with adult children. Multiple regression analysis determined that emotional cut-off was the most powerful variable affecting gerotranscendence, which was also influenced by I-position and awareness of health state.
Conclusions: Implications were discussed for educators and clinicians working with Korean elderly, and suggestions for future research were made, accordingly.
